Why does the entity business status show “No Status” or “Unknown”?

⏳ 3 min read    3 questions covered

This FAQ covers two distinct scenarios where a business status may display as “No Status” or “Unknown” in the Trade Shield application. Understanding the cause of each designation will help you take the correct next steps.

1
Why does the application show “No Status” and what does it mean?

The business in question operates as a sole proprietorship. The director (for example, John Doe) is trading in their personal capacity and is not registered with the CIPC (Companies and Intellectual Property Commission).

Because there is no valid registered business entity under that name or registration number, the system reflects a “No Status” designation.

EXAMPLE — “No Status” Display in Application

app.tradeshield.ai / credit-application
Entity Details
Entity Name
John Doe Trading
Registration No.
Business Status
No Status
Entity Type
Sole Proprietorship

⚠ Note: “No Status” does not indicate a system error. It accurately reflects that there is no registered CIPC entity to verify against.

2
What should I do next when I see the “No Status” designation?

Follow these three steps to correctly handle a “No Status” designation:

1

Cancel the current application

Cancel the application that is linked to the unregistered business entity.

2

Reinitiate under the individual’s profile

Start a new application under the individual profile of the director (not the business entity).

3

Search by full name and ID number

When prompted, search using the individual’s full name and ID number (as shown in the system) to validate the director’s information.

WHY THIS MATTERS

The proper checks are performed on the individual, not an unregistered entity
You avoid the “No Status” designation caused by referencing an unregistered entity

ⓘ Tip: Always confirm the entity type before initiating an application. If the director is trading as an individual with no formal CIPC registration, use the individual search path from the outset.

3
What does an “Unknown” business status mean?

An “Unknown” status means that the business status of the entity cannot be verified. This is different from “No Status” and relates specifically to entities registered in countries without a centralised or formal business registry system equivalent to South Africa’s CIPC.

In such jurisdictions, business registration and status tracking may not be mandated by law or systematically maintained. As a result, there is no official or statutory source from which to verify whether the entity is active, inactive, dissolved, or otherwise—hence the status remains “Unknown”.

EXAMPLE — “Unknown” Display for Foreign Entity

app.tradeshield.ai / credit-application
Entity Details
Entity Name
Acme International Ltd
Country of Registration
Zimbabwe
Business Status
Unknown
Verification Source
No formal registry available

Quick Reference: No Status vs Unknown

StatusCauseAction Required
No Status Sole proprietor — not registered with CIPCCancel and re-apply under the individual’s profile
Unknown Foreign entity — country has no formal business registryProceed with manual due diligence; no registry verification available

⚠ Note: An “Unknown” status is not an error. It is an accurate reflection of the absence of a formal registry infrastructure in the entity’s country of registration. Additional manual due diligence may be required in these cases.
